Q: What’s the difference between a NEBOSH Diploma and an NVQ?

The NEBOSH National Diploma is the flagship of NEBOSH qualifications and is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals. The course is taught by a tutor either 6 weeks in a virtual classroom or via self-study on our distance learning programme and has a mixture an assignment and online case studies assessments.  The diploma is a degree level 6, equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and can be used to continue academic studies, as a number of universities offer MSc programs will accept the NEBOSH Diplomas as a full or partial entry requirement.

The NVQ level 5 is a work-based learning programme, candidates demonstrate their knowledge through a portfolio of evidence.   The NVQ can be a preferred route for those already working in health and safety and who wish to achieve their professional qualifications by demonstrating their existing knowledge and competencies through guided units.  Portfolios are based on a candidate’s workplace, therefore an organisation can benefit directly from this approach, with candidates using their portfolio to identify gaps in the workplace.

Both qualifications are globally recognised.  Holders of either qualification are eligible to meet the academic requirements to apply for membership of many professional bodies including the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
