Dr. Julie Riggs DProf CFIOSH is the Director of Education and Membership at British Safety Council.  Julie has worked for over 30 years as an OSH practitioner and trainer, operating as a leader in strategic, corporate and global roles with broad cross-industry experience.

Phil has a breadth of operational management experience in road logistics spanning over 16 years before switching careers to become a Health and Safety practioner.

Stephen Haynes

Stephen Haynes is Director of Wellbeing at British Safety Council. He specialises in the design, implementation and management of strategic workplace health, safety and wellbeing programmes - including the development of relevant interventions, from optimisation of support infrastructures to leadership development.

Dr. Keith Whitehead C.Env

Keith has undertaken a wide range of roles including EHS consultancy, guidance and support to organisations including delivery of EHS auditor training, seminars, workshops and webinars. Keith has continued development and delivery of British Safety Council Five Star OHS and Environmental Sustainability Audits.

Amanda Owen MBE

Amanda Owen MBE is Global Safety, Health and Wellbeing Director and Board Member at Heathrow Airport. Amanda Owen’s career has spanned risk management and global safety, health and wellbeing across retail, banking, healthcare, and aviation. In 2019 she returned to Heathrow to lead safety, health, and wellbeing (SHW).

For 20 years, he has focused on culture change and behaviour to improve environment, safety, health, and quality. Based in the Lake District, he enjoys rock climbing and writing climbing guidebooks.

A workplace wellbeing expert with 25+ years of experience across global industries. She focuses on authentic leadership, psychosocial risk, and safety culture, helping organisations create healthier, more effective work environments.

Samantha Downie

A research psychologist and mental health leader with experience in DEIB, safeguarding, and evidence-based interventions. Before leading Mates in Mind, she was CEO of WPF Therapy and remains dedicated to creating impactful, inclusive workplace solutions.

Jodie Francis

A Wellbeing Health & Safety Auditor and Consultant with 9 years of experience in health, safety, and wellbeing. Specialising in large-scale construction and civil projects, she focuses on health and wellbeing policy development, fatigue management, and supporting smaller organisations in improving their OHS and wellbeing understanding.

Sophie Snell

Specialises in strategic workplace health, safety, and wellbeing, helping organisations transition from reactive to proactive, preventative strategies. As a qualified wellbeing counsellor, she supports a diverse range of industries worldwide, improving workforce health, wellbeing, and performance.

Martin Lockham

Head of Fundraising at Mates in Mind, a charity focused on improving workplace mental health. By raising awareness and addressing stigma, they support organisations across industries, helping employees understand and access the mental health support they need.

Peter McGettrick

Chairman of British Safety Council since 2021 and Managing Director of Advisory at Turner & Townsend, overseeing 400+ professionals. A Chartered Safety Practitioner, he has led and grown businesses across his career, fostering high-performance environments. Originally from Glasgow, he holds a BSc, MSc, and MBA and has a background in regional squash and international coaching.

Matthew Winn

Matthew is the Public Affairs Manager at the British Safety Council and Editor of Safety Management magazine. He focuses on health, safety, and wellbeing policy, with a keen interest in AI, technology, and the future of work. Previously, he managed a senior MP’s office, led election campaigns, and worked on data collection, levelling-up, and heritage infrastructure projects.
