The IEMA Foundation Certificate will give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to contribute to environmental and sustainability management in your organisation. It will also boost your career prospects.

Upon successful completion of the course and assessment, you automatically become an Associate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

When you study the IEMA Foundation Certificate with the British Safety Council you also receive IEMA associate membership (AIEMA), providing post-nominal letters and networking opportunities with sustainability specialists. If you already possess a membership, you'll receive a 12 months extension to it instead. 

This course covers a wide range of topics including environmental principles, legislation, management tools and discusses the role of innovation and leading practices in developing sustainable products, services and solutions.

The course covers:

• Outline the implications of global trends for the environment, for society, for the economy and for organisations
• Outline sustainable business/governance principles and their relationship with organisations, products and services
• Outline environmental principles and their relationship with organisations, products and services
• Outline major policy and legislation and their implications for organisations, products and services
• Outline major tools, techniques, systems and practices used to improve sustainability performance
• Outline the role of innovation and other leading practices in developing sustainable products and services and providing sustainable solutions
• Collect data, perform analysis, and evaluate information
• Research and plan to provide sustainable solutions
• Deliver effective communication and capture feedback
• Engage with stakeholders
• Outline tools and techniques that identify opportunities and risks
• Identify and propose ways to improve performance
• Support change and transformation to improve sustainability.

You do not need any prior knowledge before taking this interactive and engaging course as this will prepare you with everything you need to know to start your journey in environmental management.

However it is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.

Regardless of your chosen route of study, you will complete your assessment online. Assessments windows run every two weeks. Once enrolled you will have a four-week window to complete the 1-hour open-book multiple choice assessment.

Digital learning: After you have finished studying, contact us to book your exam. The cost for an exam is £37 + VAT.

Virtual classroom or Face to Face course: The 1-hour open-book multiple-choice examination is undertaken online (at home or in the workplace) within 28 days of the end of the course and is included in the price.

You will receive your certificate parchment within 8 weeks of the successful completion of your online assessment.

Once completed, our students often continue their studies by completing a IMEA Net Zero, or a NEBOSH National General, NEBOSH Diploma or sometimes broadening their knowledge with our shorter courses, such as British Safety Council Risk Assessments. Please contact us to discuss your options.
